In this edition of Tech Thoughts Daily Net News, we bring you some of the latest developments and trends in the world of technology, from social media to artificial intelligence to cybersecurity.
How Teens Use Social Media in 2014
A new report from Pew Research Center reveals how American teens are using social media platforms in 2014. The report, based on a survey of 1,060 teens aged 13 to 17, shows that Facebook is no longer the dominant platform among this age group. Instead, teens are diversifying their social media use, with Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, and YouTube being among the most popular alternatives.
And the study shows there has been an uptick in daily teen internet users, from 92% in 2014-15 to 97% today. In addition, the share of teens who say they are online almost constantly has roughly doubled since 2014-15 (46% now and 24% then). The share of teens who say they use the internet about once a day or more has grown slightly since 2014-15.
Not only is there a smaller share of teenage Facebook users than there was in 2014-15, teens who do use Facebook are also relatively less frequent users of the platform compared with the other platforms covered in this survey. Just 7% of teen Facebook users say they are on the site or app almost constantly (representing 2% of all teens). Still, about six-in-ten teen Facebook users (57%) visit the platform daily.
The report also explores how teens use different social media platforms for different purposes, such as expressing themselves, staying in touch with friends and family, getting news and information, and having fun. You can read the full report here.
The Future of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics
What will the impact of artificial intelligence and robotics be on our society and economy in the next decade This is the question that a group of experts and stakeholders were asked by Pew Research Center and Elon University's Imagining the Internet Center. The results of their survey were published in a report titled \"AI, Robotics, and the Future of Jobs\".
The report states that \"The vast majority of respondents to the 2014 Future of the Internet canvassing anticipate that robotics and artificial intelligence will permeate wide segments of daily life by 2025, with huge implications for a range of industries such as health care, transport and logistics, customer service, and home maintenance. But even as they are largely consistent in their predictions for the evolution of technology itself, they are deeply divided on how advances in AI and robotics will impact the economic and employment picture over the next decade.\"
The report presents two main scenarios for the future of jobs: one where AI and robotics displace more workers than they create new opportunities, leading to increased inequality and social unrest; and another where AI and robotics augment human capabilities and create new sources of income and innovation, leading to increased prosperity and well-being. The report also highlights some of the key themes and challenges that emerged from the respondents' comments, such as education and training, ethical and moral issues, regulation and governance, and human identity and values. Snowden's Latest Revelations on NSA Surveillance
Edward Snowden, the former NSA contractor who leaked classified documents exposing the extent of US government surveillance programs, has made several public appearances this year via video link from his exile in Russia. In these appearances, he has revealed more details about how the NSA collects and analyzes data from millions of people around the world.
Snowden's first television interview aired January 26, 2014, on Germany's NDR. In it, he claimed that the NSA engages in industrial espionage against German companies such as Siemens. He also said that he had no intention of returning to the US unless he was granted a fair aa16f39245
